Workouts available Yoast SEO free and Yoast SEO Premium

The configuration workout is available in both Yoast SEO Premium and Yoast SEO free. It is an essential workout that helps you configure up some essential Yoast SEO settings!

The configuration workout

What is the goal of the configuration workout? Yoast SEO does a lot of work for you in the background. For example, it automatically adds structured data to your pages, so search engines can understand your content. It can also make technical SEO improvements to your site. However, to do all of that well, it needs your input. That』s why we created the configuration workout! In a few steps, we』ll help you set up some essential Yoast SEO settings, so it can get you the best results. Why do I need to do SEO data optimization first? Yoast SEO needs to perform SEO data optimization for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the data optimization lets Yoast SEO scan your site as Google does. It will then be able to give you better optimizing tips. The plugin will also automatically solve some of the technical issues it finds in the background. As a result, your pages may load faster! Secondly, the plugin scans your content and counts your internal links. Based on that, it can show you the internal links pointing to your cornerstones and suggest posts you can link to your cornerstones from. That is crucial for the internal linking and the cornerstone content workouts in Yoast SEO Premium to work properly. I tried to do the SEO data optimization but it didn』t work. If the SEO data optimization failed, or you got stuck, you can find some useful tips in this help article. Why are you asking to track my data? To make Yoast SEO work well and keep improving it, we need some information about you. For example, what other plugins and themes you use, so we can make sure they work seamlessly with Yoast SEO. Or which features you use most often so we can give them some extra attention. Of course, we can』t collect that information without your permission. So, in this step, you can let us know if you would be ok with us collecting that kind of basic data.

Workouts available only in Yoast SEO Premium

Yoast SEO Premium comes with multiple features that help you improve the SEO of your site. For example, in the Premium version of the plugin, you』ll find the internal linking suggestions, the cornerstone content filter, the link counter. However, since all these features are separate, it may not be immediately obvious to you how to use them together to get the most out of them. With the workouts in Yoast SEO Premium, that becomes much easier!

The cornerstone approach workout

What is the goal of the cornerstone approach workout? Ultimately, the goal is to help you make your most important posts and pages easy to find by linking to them. But why is linking that important? Because search engines follow links to find new content. The more links there are to a page, the more important search engines will think it is. Now, some pages on your site are more valuable than others. The ones that contain the essential information that you want to rank with are called cornerstone content. So, you need to make sure these cornerstones have a lot of links pointing to them. With the cornerstone approach workout, you』ll ensure your cornerstone content is well linked, making it more likely to rank! Why should I use the cornerstone approach workout? Very often, people are eager to write new content. And, just as often, they forget to add enough links pointing to it. That is a pity because then it』s harder for search engines and people to find that content. By doing the workout, you ensure that the posts you want to rank with get enough links pointing to them to help them get found and ranked! I marked an article as cornerstone. Why don』t I see it in the lists? Did you mark your article as cornerstone in one tab while the workout was still open in another? Then, all you need to do is go to the tab with the workout, and refresh the page. You should then see the cornerstone articles in the lists. If that doesn』t work, go back and make sure that the article you wanted to mark as cornerstone has the Mark as cornerstone content toggle switched 「On」.

The orphaned content workout

What is orphaned content? It』s the content that doesn』t have any links pointing to it. Content that gets no links is hard to find, both by visitors to your site and search engines. In Yoast SEO, we consider six months or older content with less than three links as orphaned content. What is the goal of the orphaned content workout? The goal of the workout is to motivate you to clean up your site. What does that mean, exactly? It means that Yoast SEO helps you find the posts and pages on your site that don』t receive any links. Then, it lets you decide what to do with those pages: improve them, remove them or hide them from the search engines.Whatever you decide, the plugin will help you execute your decision. So, if you decide to delete some pages, it will help you redirect them properly. If you want to hide content from search engines, the plugin will automatically output the right code that gives instructions to search engines not to follow that page. Finally, if you decide to keep and improve some of your orphaned content, the plugin will help you find posts and pages from which you can link to the orphaned content. As a result, you will end up with fewer old and irrelevant pages, and you will improve the user experience on your site. Why should I use the orphaned content workout? The workout can motivate you to do one of the most tedious tasks: cleaning up! We all dread it, but we have to do it from time to time. And it』s not only about motivation. The guidance through the workout can save you a lot of precious time while helping you clean up your site and make your orphaned content findable! It is a small effort with a big payoff!

General FAQ about the workouts

What kind of effect will the workouts have on my site? Just like working out in real life, the effects may not be visible straight away. And when you work out for the first time in a while, it may seem overwhelming. But, if you consistently keep up the work, you will start seeing results. For example, linking your posts will improve your site structure and make your content easier to find. And content that is easy to find is content that gets read, engaged with, and, ultimately, content that ranks! And, getting rid of old content will make the overall experience on your site much better and prevent your visitors from ending up on dead-end pages. Do I have to complete all the steps in the workouts to improve the SEO of my site? The short answer is: yes. We tried to make it as easy and convenient as possible to get the best out of the Yoast SEO features by creating doable workouts. The workouts help you set up Yoast SEO, create a better site structure, and clean up your site, which is essential for SEO-fit sites.

Table of contentsUsing the cornerstone approach workout in Yoast SEO PremiumFAQ: The Yoast SEO Premium cornerstone approach workout

Using the cornerstone approach workout in Yoast SEO Premium

The cornerstone approach linking workout is organized as a checklist. After each step, you will see a button 「I』ve finished this step.」 If you click on it, the step will get greyed out, and you will see a checkmark in the left corner. Clicking the buttons does not affect your site or your content in any way. It is only intended to help you easily move through the steps. In addition, if you haven』t completed the SEO data optimization, you will be required to do so to be able to proceed with the workout. Running the SEO data optimization helps the plugin give you the best internal linking suggestions.Ok, now, let』s start the workout! Access the workout You can find the workout by going to the SEO admin menu item, and selecting Workouts (see image below). The Workouts screen will open, and you can select the Internal liking workout by clicking the Start workout button. Start: Choose your cornerstones! If you』ve already marked some articles as cornerstone, you』ll see them in this step. You can also add some additional articles. To do that, go through your articles via the search bar that says 「Choose cornerstone articles」 (outlined in the image below). When you select articles, they will appear in the list, and we』ll automatically mark them as cornerstone.Your situation may fit one of two scenarios: Scenario 1: You have a lot of content on your site, and you need to pick out the best articles. Great! Start by asking yourself some questions to help you decide what content to put in the spotlight. For example:– Which blog posts or pages are the most important for your website? – Which content best shows what you excel at? – What are the most useful pages for your visitors? Need some more information to help you decide? Read about what type of content should a cornerstone article be to get some more details and tips.Scenario 2: You haven』t written that much, and you don』t have a lot of content to choose from. Then, the fun is just getting started! It may cost you more time, but you can use this opportunity to write some great content. Not sure how to do that? Start by reading: What is quality content and how to create it? Check whether your cornerstones are correct and well-optimized You』ll notice that when you add articles to step 1 of the workout, they appear with the Yoast SEO bullets feedback (outlined in the image below). The first column shows you the SEO score, and the second the readability score of the post. Additionally, on the right, you can see the focus keyphrase each of the articles is optimized for (outlined in the image below). See any orange or red bullets? Or, is there a focus keyphrase missing? Then you』ll need to do some editing to ensure that your cornerstone article is in top form! Click on the link to the article to open it, and then edit it by following the feedback in Yoast SEO Premium. Are there any articles on the list that you don』t want to use as cornerstone content? You can unmark them, by following these steps:a. Click on the post from the list to open it.b. To edit the post, click on the 「Edit post」 button in the top toolbar.c. Go to the Cornerstone content feature in the Yoast SEO sidebar and switch the Mark as cornerstone content toggle to 「Off.」d. Click the Update button at the top of the screen. Check the number of incoming internal links of your cornerstones In this step, there is another list of articles. The ones with a star next to them are the articles you marked as cornerstone content. Check how many links each of your cornerstones have. Do you think your cornerstone article should have more internal links? Then, click the 「Optimize」 button. That will move the article to the next step. But, how many links should a post have? There is no easy answer to that. We can』t give you an exact number to look for. You will need to work with what makes sense for your site. Basically, you can never have too many links, only too little. Add internal links towards your cornerstones Did you spot any cornerstones with no, or only a few links pointing to them? And have you clicked the 「Optimize」 button for those articles in the previous step? Then, it』s time for the final step: adding internal links. You can do that rather easily in this third step of the workout. How? Follow the steps below!a. You』ll see a list of the cornerstone articles that you have selected. So, the cornerstones you want to add more links to.b. Click the 「Copy link」 button, to the right of the cornerstone article title. That will enable you to use the link later on. c. Find an article in the list that is relevant and related to the cornerstone article you want to add links to. d. Click on the blue link 「Edit to add link」. The post or page editing screen opens. e. Find a relevant sentence that is related to your cornerstone article. Use the link you copied in step one and insert it in the sentence you chose. Make sure that the link text is also relevant to the topic of the cornerstone. f. Finished optimizing the article? Then, click 「Finish optimizing」. g. Repeat this process for each of your chosen cornerstone content articles.h. Done with this step? Then, click 「I』ve finished this step」. Well done! You just made it easier for search engines and your audience to find your cornerstone content! By having a lot of posts or pages on your website link to your cornerstone content, you give search engines the signal that the content is important. In turn, that increases the chance that search engines will find it and index it. Of course, you make it easier for your readers to find and enjoy your content as well! So, by simply linking your pages, you』ve made a big step towards improving the SEO fitness of your content and your site!

Enhanced Slack sharing

Slack is one of the most popular communication platforms for teams. Businesses and organizations all over the world use it for their internal communication. When you enable the Enhanced Slack sharing feature, Yoast SEO will output two sets of labels + values in each post』s meta data. This will improve the way a URL from your site looks when shared on Slack. Those labels and fields are 「Written by」 and the name of the author, and 「Est. reading time」 and the estimated reading time we』ve calculated for your article. If you have a post with a nice Facebook image and description, it』ll look something like this:

As you can see this enhances the snippet and increases the amount of room your article takes up in Slack. If you don』t want this, simply disable the feature and the Written by and Estimated reading time blocks will be gone.

Every word, image, video etc. on your website is content. In our plugin, we use the SEO and the Readability analysis to check written content.

Content words

Words that carry an intrinsic meaning, like dog, training, or puppy. These words are essential for Google and users to understand what your content is about. If you look at the content words in a sentence, they should tell you what the topic of an article is. You might not understand the exact relationship of the words though, that』s what function words are for.

Cornerstone content

The content that is at the core of your website. For example, on yoast.com, we have a selection of ultimate guides on various SEO topics. Those form our cornerstone content. They are the articles that we link to the most and the articles that give the most detailed, in-depth information on the different topics. In Yoast SEO』s metabox and sidebar, you can indicate whether a post or a page is cornerstone content. If you do, the plugin will be stricter in its SEO analysis.

Estimated reading time

A feature in Yoast SEO Premium that lets you automatically add a block with the estimated reading time of your content. The feature also appears in the Insights tab in Yoast SEO Premium.

Exact match

In Yoast SEO, exact match means that the plugin recognizes the keyphrase, occurring in the exact same order you』ve entered it in the focus keyphrase field. In most cases, though, the exact match keyphrase isn』t that important. What is important is that the most meaningful words, so-called content words, like dog, training, or puppy, of your keyphrase appear enough times in your copy. Word order and words that don』t carry any intrinsic meaning, aka function words, like have or your, in most cases, don』t matter that much. When an exact match does matter, you can force Yoast SEO to only look at this by putting the keyword in between quotation marks.

F

A Yoast SEO structured data block in the WordPress block editor that lets you create FAQ pages. The block automatically adds structured data to your site, making it eligible for rich results.

Favicon

The icon used before the site name on browser tabs and in browser bookmarks.

A test that measures how difficult a text is to understand. To determine that, it looks at the number of words in your sentences and the average number of syllables per word. If you score 60 or higher, Yoast SEO will give you a green bullet.

Focus keyphrase

The phrase you』d like your post to rank for. In the past, we used to call it the focus keyword. But, since the internet grew bigger, and more and more content is out there, it』s getting harder to rank on just one word. You should aim to rank for the long tail keyphrases, meaning you should try to rank for a keyphrase consisting of multiple words, especially when you』re just starting with your website. For the SEO analysis in Yoast SEO to work, you need to set a focus keyphrase.

Footer

The bottom section of the webpage, which may contain links to other parts of the webpage.

Front end

The visible part of the website, the user interface. For web pages, that is the part constructed in HTML and enhanced with CSS and JavaScript.

Function words

Words that express the grammatical relationship between words. They don』t carry intrinsic meaning but help you build a sentence or express a feeling. Functions words are, for instance, prepositions (in, at, for), auxiliary verbs (can, do, have, may), possessive pronouns (your, his, our), or some nouns and verbs with little meaning (thing, regular, become, appear). In most cases, they don』t carry any intrinsic meaning, and therefore they won』t help Google or users understand what your article is about. Therefore, in these languages, Yoast SEO strips these words from your keyphrase and looks at the occurrence of content words.

G

Google preview

A feature in Yoast SEO that lets you see what your post or page may look like when it appears in the search results. With this feature, located in the Yoast SEO metabox and the sidebar, you can edit and preview (both for mobile and desktop) your SEO title, slug, and meta description.

H

Refers to a line, text or a phrase at the top of a written text that explains what the text is all about. Usually in a larger or bolder typeface.

Media attachment

When you upload something to WordPress, it automatically creates an attachment page for that upload. For example, an image in a post has its separate attachment page with its title and image. This kind of page is not useful in most cases because it contains thin content, which is bad for SEO. Yoast SEO takes care of the issue by redirecting all attachment pages to the URL of the media. So, people and search engines will land on the image URL instead of the attachment page.

Meta description

The short text (up to 155 characters) that you use to describe the content of your page. It appears in the search results as part of the snippet preview, so you should make sure it is inviting for people to click on. You can edit your meta description in the Google preview tab of Yoast SEO. The plugin gives you feedback on the length of your meta description, and it checks if you used your keyphrase in it.

Meta robots tags

Code that tells search engines how to crawl a page. In Yoast SEO, you can choose among three different options. No image index instructs search engines not to crawl images on a page. No Archive means that search engines should not show a cached copy of the page, and No snippet tells search engines not to show a snippet of the page in the search results.

Multilingual site

Website that is available in more than one language.

N

Nofollow tag

A robots meta tag that tells the search engines robots to not follow any links on the page at all.

Noindex tag

A robots meta tag that disallows search engines from showing this page in their results.

O

Open graph metadata

Pieces of code that give social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest information about your content. For example, the code contains information about your site』s name, the type of your content, the title of the page, the featured image, the name of the author, etc. The more complete the information, the better your posts will looks when shared on social media. In Yoast SEO, you can enable Open graph metadata and determine what your pages look like when shared on Facebook and Twitter.

Orphaned content

Content that doesn』t have any links pointing to it, and thus will stay undiscovered by visitors and search engines.

Outbound links

The links from your site to other sites. The internet is a web of sites that are connected with links. By adding links to external sites, you help build the web and make relevant connections within it! That is why Yoast SEO reminds you to add some outbound links in the SEO check.

P

Pagination

A way of organizing a lot of data within a webpage, by dividing that data (or for instance posts) over multiple pages to make it more manageable and user friendly.

Paragraph length

The length of your paragraphs, which can influence the readability of your online content. Shorter paragraphs make it easy for readers to scan the text. They are also easier to read and understand. Yoast SEO will give you a green bullet in its Readability analysis if you keep your paragraphs below 150 words.

Passive voice

A grammatical construction in which the actor and receiver are switched around. For example, a sentence using the active voice would be 「I ate the pasta,」 while the passive voice version would be: 「The pasta was eaten by me.」 Since passive voice sentences tend to be wordier and more difficult to understand, we recommend using them sparsely. Yoast SEO will warn you if your content contains too much passive voice.

Permalink (or: permanent link)

The full URL you see for your posts, pages, and all other content on your site. A permalink consists of your domain name (example: www.yoast.com) and a slug. You can edit the permalink』s slug in the Google Preview tab in the Yoast SEO metabox or sidebar.

PHP

A widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

Product page

The main page for a certain product or service.

R

Readability analysis in Yoast SEO:

An analysis in the Yoast SEO plugin that uses an algorithm to determine how readable your post is. For example, it checks the length of your sentences and paragraphs, the use of passive voice and transition words, as well as your subheadings distribution. It also gives you feedback, which you can use to make your text easier to read and understand.

Redirect manager

A feature in Yoast SEO Premium. It helps you effortlessly set redirects when you delete a page as well as manage your redirects.

Regex redirects

If you』re an expert SEO and you need to do complex redirections, you may need to use Regex – regular expressions –  redirects. With Regex redirects, you can, for instance, make a single redirect to move entire groups of URLs containing a specific keyword to a new location. This could save you a ton of time while working on a massive SEO project.

Related keyphrases

Words and phrases that are connected to your focus keyphrase. Google uses these related words to understand your text better and connect it to your other content on your site. If you have a strong coherence between all the content on your site, it』s more likely you』re a source of high-quality information for people and, therefore, a good search result. In Yoast SEO Premium, you can set related keyphrases for your post or page. You can also use the Semrush related keyphrase feature to come up with ideas for related keyphrases.

Relative URL

All URLs that do not contain a fully qualified domain name and path, but instead just the path or a portion of the path, calculated from the page at hand.

Responsive website

A website that changes its appearance and layout based on the size of the screen the website is displayed on.

REST API: Head endpoint

The Yoast SEO REST API endpoint in the General settings of Yoast SEO gives you all the metadata you need for a specific URL. This makes it easy for headless WordPress sites to use Yoast SEO for all their SEO meta output.

Rich results

Designed to summarize the content of a page in a way that makes it even easier for users to understand what the page is about in the search results. Rich results are powered by structured data.

robots.txt

A text file that tells a search engine where it can and cannot go on your website. The robots.txt file is read by search engine crawlers (also called robots, hence the name).

RSS

An RSS feed allows users to track updates from their favorite websites. However, scraper sites can abuse that and use the RSS feed to republish content from your site without your permission and without linking back to your site. The RSS settings in Yoast SEO let you add links back to your site at the end of each blog post and show search engines the article』s original source. In addition, with these settings, you can edit the content you want to put in the feed before each post and the content you want to put in the feed after each post.

Ryte integration

An integration in Yoast SEO that checks your site』s indexability (whether your site can be found by search engines) on a weekly basis. You can find the integration in the Site Health tool in WordPress.

S

Schema.org

Refers to the standardized ways of using structured data to describe the content on your site. In Yoast SEO, you can use the Schema tab to indicate what kind of content your page contains. That will make it easier for search engines to figure out what the page is about, and it will make it eligible for rich results.

Security: no advanced or schema settings for authors

A toggle in the Yoast SEO General settings that lets you disable the Advanced tab in the Yoast SEO metabox and sidebar for the authors』 user type. The Advanced tab contains settings that allow users to block search engines from crawling a page. It also includes settings that let you change the Schema metadata of a post or page. You should handle those settings carefully. By default, only administrators and editors have access to those settings.

Semrush integration

An integration in Yoast SEO that gets you access to valuable keyphrase data, powered by Semrush. All you need to do is enter your focus keyphrase in the Yoast SEO input field and then click the Get related keyphrases button. You will get a new popup window with data on related keyphrases, such as search volume and trends. In Yoast SEO Premium, you can click a button and add up to five related keyphrases to your SEO analysis.

Server

A computer or computer program which manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network.

Server side

On the server, instead of in a browser.

Sentence length

Shorter sentences are easier to follow. That does not mean that you only need to write short sentences. However, if a lot of your sentences are too long, then your content may become difficult to read. Yoast SEO checks the length of your sentences. If 25% of your sentences are longer than 20 words, the plugin will give you feedback.

SEO analysis in Yoast SEO

An analysis in the Yoast SEO plugin that gives you recommendations regarding your focus keyword and the SEO of your content. If you have Yoast SEO Premium, you can add more focus keywords, which will be put through the SEO analysis separately.

SEO title

The title that appears in the search engine results. An SEO title is different than the title of your page. Besides the page』s title, it may include a separator (a dot, a hyphen, etc.) and the company name.

SEO title width

Google measures the SEO title (the title you see in the search engine results) in pixels instead of words. That is why the Yoast SEO plugin checks your title width instead of its length.

Sidebar

A left or right column next to the main content column of a web page. In the WordPress backend, you can find the Yoast SEO (Premium) settings in the sidebar.

Siblings block

An internal linking block in Yoast SEO Premium, which lets you automatically add a list of related links to a page.

Site speed

How fast a website is served to a visitor in his browser.

Slug

The last part of the URL. For example, in the URL, https://yoast.com/contact-page-examples/ the slug is /contact-page-examples/. That is the part of the URL that you can edit with the Yoast SEO Google Preview.

SKU

Stock Keeping Unit, a unique numerical identifying number that refers to a specific stock item in a retailer』s inventory or product catalog.

Spider

A small piece of software search engines use to automatically visit and index websites.

Structured data

The code you add to your pages to help describe your content to search engines so they understand it better.

Subheading distribution

Refers to the way you use subheadings in your content. By distributing your subheadings well, you give your content structure and help readers grasp its meaning. In Yoast SEO, you』ll get a green bullet if you have at least 300 words of text between your subheadings.

Subpages block

An internal linking block in Yoast SEO Premium. If you have a parent page with many subpages, the block lets you automatically add a list of links to those subpages on the parent page.

Synonyms

Words or phrases that have the same meaning. A synonym for dog, for instance, is hound, or canine. Using synonyms in your copy can help people understand it better, especially if you』re discussing difficult topics. Using synonyms improves the readability of a text as well; if you repeat the same word very often in your copy, it looks like you』ve written it for search engines, not humans. In Yoast SEO Premium, you can indicate which synonyms there are for your keyphrase. The plugin will take these synonyms into account in certain checks.

T

Tags

Keywords used to describe an article, a product or a website.

Taxonomies

The WordPress term for content that can be grouped in, for example, categories or tags. So, taxonomies are ways to structure content within WordPress, and tags and categories are examples of a taxonomy system.

Testimonials

Written recommendation from a satisfied customer.

Text link counter

A feature in Yoast SEO that counts the number of internal links a posts contains, as well as the number of links on your site that point to that post. Having this easy overview of the internal links can help you improve your site structure. For example, if you notice that a post has too few links pointing to it, you can check your content and decide if you can link to it from any of your other posts. That will make it easier to find, both for your readers and search engines.

Theme

A set of design elements, including backgrounds, colors, and fonts. The design of your website.

Thin content

Web pages that contain little valuable content, like pages with as main content just an image and perhaps one sentence.

Title separator

A symbol used to separate different parts of your SEO title from each other. For example, the separator could be a hyphen (-), a bullet (•), or a vertical bar (|). You can set the title separator in the Yoast SEO plugin.

Transition words

Transition words are used to show the relationship between sentences and paragraphs. For example, words and phrases such as in conclusion, therefore, however, but are some examples of transition words. Using these words in your content makes it easier to read and understand. Yoast SEO checks how often you use transition words in your content and gives you feedback on it.

Twitter card metadata

A way to attach photos, videos and other data to your tweets via markup on your web pages. It will add a 『Card』 to your tweets displaying all the marked up data. See open graph metadata.

Whitespace

Portions of a page left unmarked for readability. This could be the space between a heading and a paragraph, or between columns. Also called 『negative』 space.

Word forms

The different forms you can create of a word. This means the singular and plural form of a word: dog and dogs. But also, different grammatical tenses, voices, or numbers, for instance, train, trains, was trained or training. Yoast SEO Premium also recognizes these different word forms in various languages. It will recognize different word forms of the words in your keyphrase in:

the introduction of your copy, the SEO title, the meta description, the alt text of images, the slug, the subheadings.

Moreover, the keyword density and keyword distribution check will notice these words and recognize them as part of the keyphrase. In the calculation of these two metrics, Yoast SEO Premium will take these occurrences into account.

General

The General tab of the Search Appearance settings allows you to edit the:

Title separator: what we use to separate different parts of your SEO title from each other. For example, this could be a hyphen (-), a bullet (•), or a vertical bar (|). Homepage: here, you can set the SEO title, meta description, and social settings for your homepage. The social settings are the image, title, and description used when a link to your homepage is shared on social media. Knowledge Graph & Schema.org: these settings determine what your site will look like when it shows up in Google』s Knowledge Graph.

Content Types

On the Content Types tab, you can determine whether you want each of the different content types your site has to show up in the search results and on social media.

For each content type (e.g. post, page, and product), you can set:

the SEO title;the meta description;the schema settings;the custom fields;the social image;the social title;the social description.

The social settings allow you to set a default template for how your posts, pages, or other content types look when shared on social media.

Media

On the Media tab, you can determine whether you want to redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself. When you upload an image to WordPress, that image gets a URL that becomes available. WordPress also automatically generates an entirely new web page, containing just that image: a so-called attachment URL. These attachment URLs are quite empty and because of that it』s better to disable them, and redirect them to the media item itself.

Taxonomies

On the Taxonomies tab, you』re allowed to determine whether you want search engines to show the different types of taxonomies (e.g. categories, tags) in the search results. You can also alter the templates of the SEO title, meta description, and social appearance templates for these taxonomies.

Archives

On the Archives tab, you can determine how different types of archives will be treated on your website. You can allow search engines to show the different types of archives (e.g. author archives, date archives) of your site in their search results and on social media.

Breadcrumbs

Yoast SEO offers an easy way to add breadcrumbs to your WordPress site. If your theme supports Yoast breadcrumbs, the settings on the Breadcrumbs tab will be available. Here, you can determine what your breadcrumbs will look like.

In addition, the breadcrumbs block in Yoast SEO lets you add breadcrumbs to individual posts and pages. All you need to do is add the block to the post or the page, and it』s done! If you want to learn more about it, head to the release post where we explain how the Yoast breadcrumbs block works.

RSS

These RSS settings exist because, unfortunately, there are scraper sites that republish content from other sites without their permission. If they republish your content, they usually don』t link back to your site. This leads to duplicate content in the search results and because of this, the scraper site might outrank you with your own content.

For that reason, Yoast SEO has the functionality to add links back to your site at the end of each blog post. This shows search engines the original source of the article, and this will make sure you will show up as the first result for your own content.

Social

This section allows you the option to associate your site with your social media profiles for Google』s Knowledge Graph, enable Open Graph metadata, enable Twitter card metadata, and configure other social settings. With Yoast SEO Premium, you also get social previews.

Accounts

In the Search Appearance settings, you could choose whether your site represents a person or an organization. If your site represents an organization, you』ll get a form with social media accounts that you can fill out in the Accounts tab. If your site represents a person, the form on the Accounts tab is disabled.

Facebook

On the Facebook tab, you can determine if you want to add Open Graph metadata, which allows users to share web pages on Facebook. With this feature enabled, Facebook will display a preview with images and a text excerpt when a link to your site is shared.

Twitter

On the Twitter tab, you can decide whether you want to output specific metadata for Twitter: Twitter Card metadata. We suggest leaving this enabled at all times.

Pinterest

Because Pinterest uses (Facebook』s) Open Graph metadata, the Pinterest tab is only there to verify your site with Pinterest.
