Why does Yoast SEO output 「index, follow」 in the meta robots tag?

Why does Yoast SEO output 「index, follow」 in the meta robots tag?

The meta robots tag gives search engines instructions on how you』d like them to crawl or index parts of your site. The Yoast SEO plugin allows you to easily set the meta robots tag for every post you write.

In the Advanced settings in the Yoast SEO meta box, you can determine if you want to allow search engines to show your post in the search results. You can also determine if search engines should follow links on the post (see image below).

Since Yoast SEO 14.4 it is possible to control individual links. Read more about the different link attributes or learn how to use the Yoast SEO link settings.

If you set both of these to yes, which is the default, Yoast SEO outputs the following meta robots tag in the of that page:

But if 「index, follow」 is the default, why explicitly add it?

Google and Bing have changed their handling of robots directives. The way in which these search engines now handle restrictions means it makes sense to include these defaults (「index, follow」).

Yoast SEO outputs three meta robots tags by default on each (public) page, with the following structure:

I』m not seeing a meta description in the head section in the source code of my site

I』m not seeing a meta description in the head section in the source code of my site

Yoast SEO helps you optimize the SEO title, slug and meta description of your snippet. But what if that meta description is not showing in the section in the source code of your site? What could be the problem and how can you solve it?

Let』s first take a look at an example of the source code that should appear in the section when viewing the page source. If you are not familiar with checking the page source code, please see this article.

If this meta tag is missing, there are a few things to check:

Is the required WordPress function used by your theme?Check your theme』s header.php file for a call to wp_head(). This function is required to output the Yoast SEO meta tags. If your theme does not include this function, please contact your theme developer to request compatibility with our plugin.

Was a default meta description template added?Verify that a meta description template has been added in the Yoast SEO settings under Admin > SEO > Search Appearance for the content type in question.

Does the post or page have a custom meta description?Confirm that a meta description has been added directly to the Yoast SEO meta box on the individual post or page. If no description was added, please write one, update the post or page and check the source code again.

If the description appears in the source code but is incorrect, please read this article.

How do I fix duplicate meta tags?

How do I fix duplicate meta tags?

Google Search Console (former Google Webmaster Tools) reports you have duplicate meta titles or duplicate meta descriptions. Each URL should have unique meta tags so this is important to fix as soon as possible.

Unique URLs
Subpages with duplicate content
URLs with Parameters
Other URL Formats

Unique URLs with duplicate meta tags

http://www.example.com/my-favorite-content/http://www.example.com/my-favorite-content-again/

If you have multiple unique URLs with the same meta tags, you may decide to:

Change the title of pages to distinguish between the duplicate pages.Add a Canonical URL to indicate which page search engines should indexSet all but one page to noindex.

Subpages with duplicate meta or title tags

http://www.example.com/my-favorite-content/http://www.example.com/my-favorite-content/page/20/

If you have paginated URLs with duplicate meta or title tags, you can add the page template variable in two ways.

1. Add the page variable to the metas template for a site-wide fix for pages, posts, or taxonomies that do not have custom meta tags. This variable can be added by going to SEO->Search Appearance->Content Types OR Taxonomies (depending on where the issue is) and making sure the title field has the page variable: %%page%%.

If you do not see the Page Template variable you will need to search for it by clicking on Insert Snippet Variable and then searching for the %page variable.

2. Add the page variable directly to the page, post, or taxonomy for customized meta and title tags.

Should search engines follow links on this page?

Should search engines follow links on this page?

In the Advanced tab of Yoast SEO you can allow or block search engines from following links in a post or a page, by selecting one of the radio buttons.

Search engines index websites by following links. But, links also help them make sense of your site and its structure. As such, they are very important for your ranking. So, why would you want to prevent them from following links in a post? Before making the decision, ask yourself the following questions:

Are all the links featured on this page trustworthy? If, for example, the page features user-generated content that you cannot fully control, you may want to block search engines from following the links. Are the links I added to this post valuable? Sometimes, you need to link to admin or login pages. Those do not add value to your SEO, so it is safe to discourage robots from following them.Did I include paid links in this post? You may have some sponsored links featured on a page. But, are you sure you want search engines to associate your website with the site you are linking to? If the answer is no, then don』t let them follow the link.

To learn more about this topic, you can read this article. Or, head to Google to check their guidelines.

Since Yoast SEO 14.4 it is possible to control individual links. Read more about the different link attributes or learn how to use the Yoast SEO link settings.
